The Short Answer

           Stacked kitchen cabinets

are two rows of wall cabinets installed one above the other, so the run reaches the ceiling instead of stopping partway up. They work best in rooms with tall ceilings, which describes most older

           New Orleans

houses. The upper row is genuinely usable for seasonal and overflow storage, and it removes the dead soffit gap that stock cabinetry leaves behind. The decision usually comes down to ceiling height, budget, and whether you want the top row glazed, solid, or open.

What Stacked Kitchen Cabinets Actually Are

A standard wall cabinet run is one row of boxes hung above the countertop. A stacked run adds a second, shorter row of cabinets on top of the first, carrying the cabinetry up to the ceiling or close to it. The two rows are usually different heights, with the lower row doing the daily work and the upper row holding what you reach for a few times a year.

The term describes a layout, not a product. You are not buying a special cabinet. You are buying a taller run made of two boxes instead of one, with a shared face frame treatment or a deliberate reveal between them so the join reads as intentional rather than accidental. In practice, it is built as part of

Most homeowners first notice stacked cabinets in photographs without knowing what they are looking at. What registers is that the kitchen looks finished at the top. There is no shadowed gap collecting dust above the cabinets, and no boxed-in soffit interrupting the wall. That single detail changes how tall the room feels more than paint color does.

Stacked and Staggered Cabinets: How They Differ

The two terms get used interchangeably and they are not the same thing. Stacking is vertical. Staggering is about depth and height variation across the run.

Two rows of cabinets, one above the other, running to the ceiling. The line across the top is level.

            Staggered.

Cabinets of different heights or depths are placed side by side, so the top edge steps up and down across the wall. Often used to frame a range hood or a window.

            Both together.

A stacked run can also be staggered, with the upper row broken by a taller section over the cooking area. This is common in larger kitchens and it needs drawing before it is built.

Staggering adds visual interest but it also adds surfaces that collect dust and it can make a small kitchen feel busy. Stacking is the calmer of the two and it is usually the better choice in a narrow room. If your kitchen is a galley in a shotgun house, stack and leave the staggering alone.

Ceiling Heights That Work, and the Ones That Do Not

This is the question that decides everything else, and New Orleans homeowners are in an unusually good position on it.

Stock wall cabinetry tops out at around 42 inches. Set on a standard 18 inch backsplash above a 36 inch counter, that puts the top of the run at roughly 8 feet. In a house with an 8 foot ceiling, a single tall cabinet already reaches the top and there is nothing to stack.

Older New Orleans homes are a different case. Shotguns, camelbacks and double gallery houses commonly carry ceilings between

           11 and 14 feet

. In a room like that, a 42 inch cabinet leaves several feet of blank wall above it. Builders have historically filled that space with a boxed soffit, which is cheap and reads as unfinished in a room with that much vertical volume. Stacking is the alternative, and in these houses it is often the only treatment that looks deliberate.

Ceiling Height What Usually Fits Practical Note 8 ft Single run, no stack A 42 inch cabinet already reaches the ceiling. Stacking has nowhere to go. 9 ft Single run plus a short stack A 12 to 15 inch upper row closes the gap without dominating the wall. 10 to 11 ft Full stacked run The most common stacking scenario. Upper row is genuinely usable. 12 ft and above Stacked run with a ladder or rail Reachable storage stops around 7 feet. Above that, plan access before you plan the boxes.

The rule of thumb worth remembering is that anything above roughly seven feet needs a plan for getting to it. That does not mean do not build it. It means decide now whether you want a library ladder, a rail, or simply to accept that the top row is for the things you take down twice a year.

Can You Stack Base Cabinets on Top of Each Other?

This comes up often enough to answer directly. Base cabinets are built for a different job. They are deeper, usually 24 inches against a wall cabinet's 12 or 13, and they are engineered to carry load down to the floor rather than to hang off a wall.

Putting a base cabinet above another base cabinet gives you a very deep upper run that projects into the room, overhangs the counter, and puts weight in a place the wall was never asked to hold. In a house with plaster on lath and century old framing, that last point is not theoretical.

What people usually want when they ask this is more depth in the upper run, and there is a better answer. Deeper wall cabinets are made. A 15 or 18 inch wall cabinet gives you meaningful extra capacity while still being designed to hang. If you need the full 24 inches, the right solution is usually a tall pantry cabinet that runs floor to ceiling, not two stacked bases.

The short version is that stacking wall cabinets is a normal, well understood build. Stacking base cabinets is a workaround that creates problems in exchange for storage you can get another way.

The most useful thing about a stacked upper row is that it can absorb the storage a New Orleans house was never built to provide. These homes were designed around freestanding furniture. Pantries were small or nonexistent, and the kitchens were sized for a way of cooking that nobody does now.

A stacked upper row can take the overflow directly. Large stock pots, roasting pans, the seafood boiler, holiday serving pieces, small appliances that come out three times a year. None of that needs to be at eye level, and all of it needs to be somewhere.

Stacking adds cost. It is a second row of boxes, more doors, more hardware, more finish, and more labor on install day. The question is what you get back, and it is worth answering before you

Storage is the obvious answer, but the less obvious one is that stacking removes a compromise. A soffit exists because the cabinets did not reach. It is a construction solution to a dimensional problem, and once you notice it in a room with 12 foot ceilings you tend to keep noticing it.

The other return is fit. Cabinetry built to the actual ceiling in your house is measured to your house. That matters more here than in most markets, because the walls are rarely plumb and the floors have settled. A run that is scribed and shimmed on site sits tight to the wall along its whole length. A stock run in the same room leaves a tapering gap that gets filled with trim.

project, it is worth knowing where a builder would spend. Asked what to prioritize if only one thing could be upgraded, Devon Sweeney has pointed to cabinetry: the higher the quality, the better the return on the kitchen. Soft close hardware on doors and drawers is the other item that comes up constantly, and it adds very little to a cabinetry package relative to how often it gets noticed.

Sustained Gulf Coast humidity is the deciding factor in cabinet construction. Particleboard and unsealed MDF absorb moisture, swell and delaminate. Plywood carcasses with sealed edges and a catalyzed finish hold up, which is why they are specified by default rather than offered as an upgrade.

Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, and homes routinely lose air conditioning for days. Cabinetry has to survive humidity swings that most stock boxes are not rated for.

Century old plaster on lath and pier and beam floors that have settled into deltaic soil mean almost nothing is plumb or level. Every run needs scribing and shimming on site, and a stacked run has twice as much edge to scribe.

There is also a matching question in a historic home. Old growth cypress and heart pine set the visual reference in this city, and new millwork has to be matched in profile and finish rather than approximated. On Garden District and Uptown projects that often means sourcing salvage stock from local architectural suppliers so the new work reads as original.

But historic district work has its own schedule, and if your kitchen project touches a window or anything visible from the street, that review sits on the critical path. Our

Nine feet is the practical minimum for stacking to look right. Below that, a single tall cabinet already reaches the ceiling and a second row has nowhere to go. At 9 feet a short upper row of 12 to 15 inches closes the gap cleanly. Most older New Orleans homes are well above that, with ceilings commonly running 11 to 14 feet.

Are the top cabinets usable or just decorative?

They are usable, with a caveat. Comfortable reach stops at around seven feet, so anything above that needs a ladder or a rail. That makes the upper row well suited to seasonal and overflow storage rather than daily items. Decide on the access method before fabrication, because a rail needs blocking behind the cabinet face.

Do stacked uppers cost more than a soffit?

Yes. A soffit is framing and drywall. A stacked row is a second set of boxes, doors, hardware and finish, plus additional install labor. What you get in exchange is usable storage and a run that reaches the ceiling. Costs vary by door style, finish and interior hardware, so the comparison is worth pricing on your actual kitchen rather than estimating.

Can you stack base cabinets on top of each other?

It is not recommended. Base cabinets are deeper and are built to carry load to the floor rather than hang from a wall. Stacked bases project into the room and put weight where the wall was not designed to hold it. A deeper wall cabinet or a floor to ceiling pantry cabinet solves the same problem properly.

What is the difference between stacked and staggered cabinets?

Stacked means two rows one above the other with a level top line. Staggered means cabinets of different heights or depths side by side, so the top edge steps across the wall. A run can be both, but staggering adds visual complexity that rarely helps in a narrow galley kitchen.

Do stacked cabinets work in a shotgun house kitchen?

Often very well, because shotgun kitchens are usually narrow with high ceilings, which is the exact case stacking solves. The constraint is width rather than height. Keep the run simple and avoid staggering, and make sure the design does not block the straight line circulation a shotgun depends on.
